Court removes children after mom joins cult

Johannesburg - A court has removed two children from their mother's care after she apparently joined a religious cult, the Sunday Times reported.

"[My wife] is of the view that she is a messenger from God," the father of the children, aged 10 and 12, said in papers before the North Gauteng High Court.

He approached the court last week with an urgent application to have the children placed in his care. He feared for his wife's ability to look after their children after she apparently become "crazy" and "irrational" since joining a cult, seemingly "Satanic in nature".

The newspaper reported the man accused his wife of taking the children to "cleansing rituals" after they had contact with him.

She had banned them from drinking Coke, telling them its symbol was "from the devil". The children were allegedly not allowed to blow a vuvuzela as it would prevent them from hearing God. According to her husband, she had tried to anoint the children's Xbox game console with "holy oil".

A court-mandated psychological evaluation of the mother, as well as a probe by a family advocate, was expected to follow.

The children were currently living with the father while the mother had visitation rights. The couple are in the process of divorcing.
